Description: This presentation will highlight the latest research and strategies in managing diabetes in older adults to optimize care for this increasingly important population. The challenges of managing diabetes in older adults are numerous: metabolic changes with aging, comorbidities, and polypharmacy. Older adults frequently develop alterations in insulin sensitivity, decline in cognitive status, and frailty; individualized management plans balance control of hyperglycemia against the risk of hypoglycemia and other potential complications. Lifestyle interventions must still be included in a holistic management approach but are increasingly secondary to considerations like the patient's waning renal function and increased susceptibility to cardiovascular complications, among others. Additionally, this stage involves the support given and information shared with patients, focusing on maintaining higher compliance rates and living qualities.
